MEET THE MAN BEHIND THE BRAND "HOLD ON, GOD'S GOT YOU"
Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Johnnie along with Elroy Forbes and later Mike Hill, started a Christian rap group on the campus of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. That group later changed its name to E.T.W., End Time Warriors, when signed in 1989, to Forefront Records. E.TW. recorded under Yo, Forefront along with label mate, DC Talk. E.T.W. recorded 5 Albums and was a Dove Award nominated Christian Hip-hop group for Song of the Year and Album of the Year, multiple times. Over a ten-year period, E.T.W. performed and ministered for thousands of people in churches, schools, theaters, arenas and even prisons throughout the United States and abroad. In 1998, the group moved on to individual projects and ministries. Johnnie moved to Chicago, where he was involved in the local church as a Youth Pastor for Abundant Life Church, as a Chicago worship band member, and television ministry program producer /fill- in host. He currently resides in Chicago with his wife, Dally and his two children.
MIC DROP is the first documentary to illustrate the origin story of Christian Hip Hop (CHH). It tells the story of the genre's evolution from emerging underground movement to youth-culture staple — making it essential viewing for fans and newcomers alike. With appearances from artists like Chris Cooper (SFC), Stephen Wiley, Dynamic Twins, Gospel Gangstaz, Fred Lynch (P.I.D.), Pettidee, and Michael Peace to music executives Jimmy Kempner (Frontline Records) and Joseph Taylor (Broken Records), this film is able to tap into the heart of the "grass roots movement" that began the early 1980's and still continues to thrive today.
In his directorial debut, Darius West bridges the generation gap between today's CHH artists and the legends who brought the genre into existence. Through this collaboration, MIC DROP reframes the narrative to include the originators of a movement that no one genuinely understood, until now. From its humble beginnings in the 1980s, CHH has spread to the mainstream culture and has impacted a wide range of listeners today.
